How High?

Rising construction equals rising profits.  The Dubai Tower, or “Burj Dubai”, is slated to become the world’s tallest tower.  Located in downtown Dubai,  it reaches 79 floors so far.  By the end of 2008, it will extend at least 700 metres, and cost 1 billion dollars.

However, Emaar Properties, the company promoting the tower, refuses to reveal the end goal.  Only when construction is finished will the general public find out how high the tower reaches.  “At the moment, we are not answering. We’ll say it (will be) more than 700 metres and more than 160 stories … The people who need to know, know,” says Greg Sang, the Emaar official in charge of Burj Dubai.

Every week, two stories are added to the tower.  It is expected to be the centerpiece of a 20-billion-dollar venture featuring the construction of a new district, “Downtown Burj Dubai”.  This new community will have 30,000 apartments and the world’s largest shopping mall.

Currently, the world’s tallest inhabited building is “Taipei 101” in Taiwan, which is 508 metres tall.

Yoga Is AWESOME!

class_image.gifYoga practioners everywhere are finding amazing improvments in their health and happiness through their weekly yoga classes. More and more research is being done on yoga lovers and are showing that regular yoga classes can help such things as

HEART HEALTH, WEIGHT CONTROL, INSOMNIA, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION, STAMINA, DIGESTION, FLEXIBILITY and CIRCULATION.

To name a few.

Yoga is also much more than just a physical exercise practice. Yoga, meaning ‘yoke’ in Sanskrit, is a family of ancient spiritual practices originating in India. It is one of the six schools of Hindu Philosophy and has been called a ‘science’ or ‘technology’ of liberation. This is because, unlike purely theoretical philosophies, yoga seeks to provide the student with a practical path (or indeed many possible paths) towards the common goal of liberation.

Feel like getting a little liberated? Or at least a bit more flexible? Try some yoga! It’s good!

Hockey Overload

I know that this is the second hockey post in as many weeks, but this is a Canadian-based site remember. Also on Friday’s we tend to post news that is more entertaining in its goodness than effect.

Hockey good thing number 1:

“A recent winner of a hockey contest on Information Morning in Fredericton gave back his grand prize, asking the show hold an auction with proceeds going to a child who couldn’t afford to play hockey this year.” From Inside the CBC. A news story about hockey from a CBC blog about a contest run by the CBC that also involves beer (can’t much more stereotypically Canadian than that).

Hockey good thing number 2:

Canadian researchers have found out what spot of the ice a hockey goalie needs to watch.

Previously we spoke of hockey on Google Video.

Free Hockey

hockey This is shamelessly showing how Canadian ThingsAreGood is. Fridays are the day when we put up “fun” good news, and what’s more fun than hockey?

Google has announced a deal with the NHL to show hockey games on Google Video, just not live games.

“Now you can download full-length NHL games and watch them on your time. Whether it’s a memorable game or a keepsake of your first in-arena experience, NHL Video is always available on Google.”

NANOWRIMO

runnerIt’s that time of the year again – NANOWRIMO!

“National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It’s all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.”

I’ve tried this before and it was great fun, just kiss your life goodbye as you try to write a novel in a month.
