Solar Fashion

neat! I like when technology and fashion merge because neat-o concepts like this get made. Practicality on the other hand can be worried about later (although practical applications of solar powered clothing exist).

“Solar cells are embedded on some of the tiles: they charge the dress during the day, and make it change colors in dimly lit surroundings.

“Each tile is designed in such a way as to accommodate a solar cell, a RGB LED, or a photocell, and jumper connectors (in the form of 0 Ohm resistors). A control board provides power, communicates with the tiles, and links to a computer via RF. The dress is completely modular both in terms of software and hardware.”

adi.JPGOur artist spotlight this month is Toronto’s Adi Zeharia. Adi is attaining her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Ontario College of Art and Design this year. Through her acceptional talent she has been awarded several scholarships and her work has been seen in over 7 exhibitions over the past three years. Adi has created her own unique style by breaking up forms into shapes, to be both of aesthetic interest to and to create a playful atmosphere. Her work is colorful and ethereal and is laced with intriguing whimsical qualities.

In some of her most recent work she is exploring the concept of how our society views death. Adi looks at a connection with animals and nature to explore how we might find a more peaceful relationship to our own finite nature.

“In the West (or in an urban envirionment) it feels like there’s a societal denial of that relationship, and maybe people would make better choices in life, if they formed stronger understandings of their deaths…. maybe thats why having a relationship with nature makes people feel more alive, because nowhere is death more evident…”

NYC Garbage Cube

A lot of people’s garbage is another man’s, er, art.

An artist in New York City scours the streets looking for dropped metrocards, gum wrappers, coffee cups, etc. until he creates the perfect mixture. He then encases the rubbish in a glass cube that you can purchase NYC garbage over the internet.

Highlights include garbage from the Republican National Convention!

Library on the Moon

moon David McKa, a (rocket?) scientist, is arguing that the Moon can be used as the best time capsule and a digital store hose for human history. Essentially it would be modern day Library of Alexandria – but this won’t burn down.

Astronauts would setup a digital store house and could update it with future voyages to the Moon.

Storing things on the moon means no worries about oxygen eroding materials. Other environmental concerns that damage books and other materials on Earth wouldn’t be a problem in outer space. The Moon is also the only place that humans have yet to pillage, and should stay that a way for awhile to come.

Madrid Fashion Week Projects Image of Health & Beauty

Its Fashion week in Madrid, but many of the models will be heading home rather than down the catwalk as organizers say they are too thin.

Although it provoked outrage in the modeling community, regional government organizes and sponsors of this international event say this year they want to portray an image of health and beauty rather than Heroine Chic. Organizers say they have a responsibility to project healthy body images and fear that waif-like models may negatively influence young girls. Said event organizer Concha Guerra: “Fashion is a mirror and many teenagers imitate what they see on the catwalk.”

Models are measured using the Body Mass Index, taking into account height and body type. Organizers of a similar event in Italy have vowed to continue the trend.
