Band of the Month: SOHN

Hey readers!

This months band is SOHN.

London born and Vienna settled, SOHN is longing, brooding, and beautiful. Much like Toronto’s current state of anticipation for this winter’s eventual end. SOHN uses powerfully pulsing digital beats with spiralling layers of arpeggiating synth to provide an appropriately intense foundation for the mezmorzing, high tenor vocal harmonies.

Crank it while you look out your window and dream of the oncoming Spring.

Ducks: A Story About the Tar Sands

Kate Beaton of Hark a Vagrant fame once worked in the Alberta tar sands. She recently made a short comic about her time working there (which she did to pay off student debt) and it provides a wonderful human side to the tar sands narrative.

Read the comic here.

Band of the Month: Revelstoke

Happy Spring! We made it!!

Today’s band is Revelstoke.

Revelstoke, inspired by a sleepy town nestled in the foothills of the Rocky’s, and propelled by the influence of the Toronto urban soundscape. His first ep, ‘My oh My’ is a gentle journey through memorable vocal refrains, guitar looping, and occasionally accented by frantic and unconventional banjo layering. Revelstoke depicts the wonderfully patient and beautifully brooding marriage between the calm and the chaotic.

Band of the Month: Ween

Hi readers, February’s band is Ween!

Conceived in New Hope, Pennsylvania by Gene and Dean Ween, Ween has achieved tremendous underground success with a cult following that has taken their music all over the world, yet has never really become well known in mainstream American pop music.

Despite being generally referred to as Rock Music, Ween reaches a quite extensive variety of genres, bridging rock, funk, soul, electronic, psychedelic, just to name a few. As well as being musically proficient, Ween has a noticeably strong element of absurdity and quirky humor.

If you haven’t heard them before, or if it’s just been a while, give em a go by checking out the link below!

Who doesn’t love a good song and a smile.
