Taxes are good for YOU!
A study by the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives released its report yesterday entitled, the Social Benefits and Economic Costs of Taxation: A Comparison of High- and Low-Tax Countries by Neil Brooks and Thaddeus Hwong. The report studies high-tax Nordic countries and low-tax Anglo-America countries on 50 social and economic measures and finds the high-tax Nordic countries score better in 42 categories. In short, tax cuts are disastrous for the well-being of a nation’s citizen.
The report alleges that Canada’s fairly low tax rate will cause Canada to fall behind a number of OECD nations in a wide range of social and economic areas. Countries like Finland with high tax rates are actually preforming quite well economically, with a steady share of the research and development market. Smart and savy.
A Pelican Love Story
![]()
Its a story of rescue, heroism and love…..and it involves a pelican.
In Fife, Scotland a rescue worker, named Alexis saved a male pelican who had been found suffering from blood poisoning after it escaped from a wildlife park on the Isle of Man. She was the first to administer his antibiotics and put him to sleep for the night. He has been showing signs of a massive pelican crush ever since…..
“â€He looks right into my eyes and puts on what I can only describe as a mating display, with his wings up and his head bowed down. He’ll walk over to me, snuggle in and preen me. He loves to take my hair or my hand in his mouth and he also plays with my shoelaces…..But it’s only me for some reason.â€
When other workers enter he bites them, and no-one can feed him fish like she can.
The bird, nicknamed Romeo will return to his home back with the other pelicans soon. Alexis hopes he will get over her when he returns home with the other lady birds.
Robothink: Japanese Robot Museum
This a fun thing for this Friday. Japan now has a robot museum.
“Finally, scholars have a place to conduct Astro Boy studies. Robothink, Japan’s first bot museum, opened its doors this fall. The 28,000-square-foot facility is housed in a former used-car dealership in Nagoya. From Robby to Aibo, the droid depository features dozens of actual automatons, plus replicas of real and fictional bots.”
Stained Art Tea Cups
Tea cups get stained and that’s a fact that once was bad and now is good. Thanks to artist Bethan Wood who has made a tea cup that shows groovy designs when it gets stained.
“Stain is a set of a teacups designed to improve through use. This project examines the assumption that use is damaging to a product (For example, scratches on an iPod).
The interior surface of the cup is treated so as to stain more in predetermined places. The more the cups are used, the more the pattern is revealed. Over time they will build up an individual pattern dependent on the users personal way of drinking tea.”
