Since the end of the Cold War armed conflicts around the globe have decreased, thanks mainly to the United Nations being able to launch peacekeeping operations. Altogether the planet has seen a decrease in conflicted-related deaths including a decrease in human rights abuses.
The report, financed by five governments, also states that major conflicts with 1,000 or more deaths have seen an 80% decrease since 1992. The average amount of deaths created by a single war has decreased dramatically as well.
Actress Angelina Jolie has recently been presented with the Global Humanitarian Award from The United Nations Association of the U.S.A. for her work in aiding refugees all over the Globe.
She first became involved with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) after travelling to the small African country of Sierra Leone, which has been devastated by years of civil war. After witnessing the suffering and challenges that refugees face she chose to use her noteriety as a highly popular actress to aid in their cause.
Angelina has visited more than 20 countries to talk personally to refugees and has also become highly regarded for her activism before senior political and economic leaders in arguing the protection of refugees. She has served as a voice for millions of displaced people all over the Globe.

Agricultural Ministers in South East Asia have agreed on a plan to wipe out avain flu.
“The three-year plan includes provisions for a disease surveillance and alert system, vaccinations, improving diagnostic capability and the establishment of disease-free zones.”
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in negotiations with EU foreign ministers for Turkey to become a member of the European Union. Entry talks have been in the works since December of 2004, however the Prime Minister must first be able to show that Turkey is ready for what reposibilities come with being a European country. Human rights issues are being addressed in Turkey and much progress is being made. Today the talks are set to begin and may take up to a decade or more before a descision is met.
Human Rights Watch said that freedom of expression, torture and ill-treatment, freedom of assembly and internal displacement are all areas where important initial progress has been achieved but where significant additional efforts are needed to demonstrate lasting positive change. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair said the deal also shows that there is no fundamental clash of civilisations between Christians and Muslims.
“On the contrary, if [Turkey] fulfils the same principles of human rights, then Muslims and Christians can work together.”
If the decision is met this could potentially be a very positive move for Turkey as a Country.
