Time Aware

Metaphorically, the atomic clock has been the measure for the potential of an atomic doomsday scenario caused by the proliferation of atomic weapons. The hands have gone beyond the 11th hour many times; paralleling world events. But now the scientific committee that determines the clocks’ positions are accounting for other world events that have the potential for similar consequences to an atomic doomsday. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists are taking stock of the threats of catosprophic nature to human society from the nano-technology, climate change, life sciences and information technology fields in order to raise their public profile. The group hopes to raise awarness of the potential dangers of new technological fields.

India and Nepal Ready for Democracy

India is helping Nepal to foster democracy in light of the recent political turmoil. The King of Nepal tried to institute anti-democratic, fascist, policies in the start of this year. The elected officals of Nepal didn’t like this and united in their opposition to the king. As a result the king acquiesced to the opposition and democracy has come out stronger than ever before.

India is looking to lend some knowledge to Nepal.

China to Build a New Earth

The Beijing-based International Society for Digital Earth has been founded to compile data from all sorts of digital earth models in order to make the most realistic computer simulation of the planet as possible.

Research will focus on climate change and other global issues. The project will help us analyze a lot of data about this planet we live on and hopefully find some solutions to environmental problems. What’s more “the society is expected to recruit members from developing countries, particularly Africa and Latin America, to raise their awareness of the opportunities the project offers.”

One World Africa has nice article written about the Africa Freedom day. Let’s hope that the spirit that Africa Freedom day represents is never forgotten.

“Africa Freedom day which falls on 25th May, is a day in which as Africans we observe the creation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and pay tribute to the Heads of State, who through a common vision of unity, decided to seek a joint African solution to the dichotomy facing Africa in the 1960s.

Forty-one years ago, leaders of the African Continent decided to establish the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). Driven by a common aspiration towards de-colonisation, liberation, equality, justice and progress, an inter-African organisation of independent states was founded. “
