  1. This isn’t completely true. For monitors like cathode ray tubes (CRTs) or plasma screens, having a black screen uses less energy. However, liquid crystal display (LCD) screens use the same amount of energy no matter what color the screen is. This is because pixels on an LCD screen block light to create a black image, and the lighting remains on even though it’s being blocked. See an example of this at: http://callforhelptv.com/callforhelp/shownotes/0283.shtml?regular

Given the rising number of LCD screens, I don’t think this would be a very big power saver.

  2. I love this website and check it out everyday, have for a long time. But I’m a little upset by this entry. You just switched to a layout that uses much lighter colors than your old layout. If white layouts are such a concern, why haven’t you changed? I know this website isn’t nearly as popular as Google (no offense, but it’s hard to get Google’s numbers 🙂 but still, every little bit counts! I just find it a little stereotypical that you’re calling out other companies that use white backgrounds when your new layout uses much more white than before.

  3. Hi Andi, thanks for the comment.

To be perfectly honest the thought of energy consumption never crossed my mind (note Craig’s comment) when redesigning the site.

I also know that we get nowhere near the amount of hits that google gets.

I’m curious as to you finding it stereotypical that we are asking for change but not enacting it ourselves. I know that we’re not perfect, but is it really stereotypical behaviour for us at TaG?

  4. Please change your background to black. I will keep coming back. I love this site. But there is no possible way for me to get this out of my head now. So when I see this site I will want to write in every time. Tell you what. I will start a petition to have google change their background to a darker color upon the publication of this discovery. Thank you TAG! You are truly the best site!

  5. If we make the background black, it will make the site a lot harder to look at (and that’s not good). Also, please notice that most elements on this site are off-white 😉

    Glad you like the site!

  6. See blacklys.com – The Black Google that i have ever seen

They have a firefox Search Extension too.. Interesting..

More over, You can rename the main display to anything you like. Cool huh?
