UN says World Response to Tsunami was the Best

United NationsThe United Nations has announced that the global response to the tsunami about a year ago was the best disaster response yet. Governments followed through, for the most part, with the money pledged and the amount of money donated by private donors was the largest ever seen.

”The world’s response to the tsunami was the best ever,” U N emergency coordinator Jan Egeland said. ”Governments, the private sector, and individuals around the world opened their hearts and their wallets. Private donations for the tsunami eclipsed anything seen before,” he told Reuters.

EU Questions CIA’s Activity in Europe

European lawmakers want to find out what is going on with CIA “torture planes” flying through their airspace and landing in some European nations.

The planes use airstrips in Europe as the flights transfer people to “secret” CIA bases. Interest in America’s activities involving the planes, bases, and torturing is on the rise among Europeans. It’s good to see that the Europeans want to find out what is really going on.

16 Days of Activism

16 Days Of Activism Against Gender Violence

We’re in the midst of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. A campaign that began in 1991, the 16 Days is held annually between November 25 (International Day Against Violence Against Women) and December 10 (International Human Rights Day). The period also incorporates World AIDS Day and the memorial anniversary of the Montreal Massacre on December 6. This year’s 16 Days theme is “For the health of women, for the health of the world: no more violence.”

The link provided above is a fabulous webpage that is well-worth exploring. Particular resources that stand out include, in PDF form, “Suggested Actions: 16 ideas for 16 days” as well as links that will provide you with more resources on both violence against women and on HIV/AIDS.

Take some time to explore these resources and learn how you can participate during the 16 Days, and also help educate people on these important issues.

Klarifying Kyoto

The UN climate conference being held currently in Montreal is proceeding very well according to many sources. The countries have decided on a way to measure greenhouse gasses and carbon emissions.

“Rules defining how Kyoto will proceed were outlined in the Marrakech Accords in 2001, and adopting them was a major achievement of the Montreal conference, according to delegates.”

Previously The Next Kyoto Protocol

The Next Kyoto Protocol

This week in Montreal the United Nations Climate Change Conference will be held. Is this a good place? The conference is a meeting of all the countries that ratified the Kyoto Protocol to see what the next Protocol should look like. The results of this conference are imperative to the planet’s future, some people are interested in a looser set of requirements, and others want a different set of measurements to set targets.

Evidence that climate change is very dangerous to humanity is now being recognized and hopefully this will be acknowledged on an official and international level in Montreal this week.
