Russian Sub Crew Rescued

The Russian mini-submarine that was trapped in a fishing net 190 meters below the Pacific has now been rescued. All members of the seven member crew are alive.

A British robotic submarine cut the Russian mini-sub free of the fishnet that it was stuck in. Moscow had asked for help from America, Britian, and Japan. All three responded quickly with the British able to airlift their robotic sub to a nearby Russian naval base the fastest. From the base a Russian boat took the British sub out to sea.

A Nuclear Step in the Right Direction

India and Pakistan are taking steps to reduce the threat of nuclear war in their region. The two atomic rivals have recently begun steps to thaw their chilly relationship, which has seen them rattle their nuclear sabers more than once. But, atomic weapons and dense populations don’t mix. (Well, nuclear weapons don’t really mix will with anything.)

India and Pakistan will now warn each other before they test their weapons. As well, a new nuclear hotline will allow the two governments to contact each other in an effort to disarm tense situations. Hey, it’s a step in the right direction.

Wind Power Potential!

Map of Wind Power PotentialAccording to a Stanford University study there is enough wind to generate five times more energy than the world currently needs. The total output of power is predicted to be 72-terrawatts – and that’s a conservative number.

The researches placed 8,199 wind monitoring devices around the globe to reach their conclusion. Wind monitoring devices used in the study were located primarily in the developed world, as a result they had to generalize in the majority world.

Jordan Denies U.S. Immunity

Jordan’s Parliament has recently decided to reject a bill that would have given American troops immunity from prosecution by the International Criminal Court. Jordan was concerned that their sovereignty would be comprised by agreeing to America’s demands. 100 countries had signed immunity agreements with the USA.

Jordan has made a smart decision because the International Criminal Court is a institution with great potential, and all countries should respect it.

Colombian Justice

Four soldiers and one civilian are facing charges for the murder of three union leaders. The international community, including the United States, are putting pressure on the South American country to respect human rights. The majority of the human rights infractions seem to come from the government’s militias committing attacks against civilians. The US has withheld $100 million in aid until progress is made on human rights, inclusing purging human rights violators from the armed forces. Source: New York Times July 15, 2005
